Books
There are many books on antitrust and competition policy. I have particularly enjoyed the following:
- Bishop, S. and M. Walker (2002). The Economics of EC Competition Law. London: Sweet & Maxwell. Illustrates the difficulties in applying econometric methods to antitrust cases., with plenty of illustrations from past cases.
- Bork, R.H. (1978). The Antitrust Paradox - A Policy at War with Itself. New York: Basic Books. A classic, self explanatory title.
- Elhauge, E. and D. Geradin (2008). Global Competition Law and Economics. Hart Publishing. Acknowledges the importance of economic analysis in antitrust et revisits EU and US cases while offering a comprehensive overview of most of the topics of interest in antitrust.
- Fox, E. M. and D. A. Crane (2007). Antitrust StoriesFoundation Press, Thomson West. A series of "stories" about important cases (from Standard Oil to Microsoft) told by prominent antitrust economists and lawyer Sometimes one-sided view of the case but always entertaining..
- Jones, A. and B. Sufrin (2004). EC Competition Law. Oxford University Press. Written by two lawyers, provides a good description of the EC law and also draws parallels with the US law.
- Motta, M. (2004). Competition Policy -- Theory and Practice. Cambridge University Press. A good textbook mixing economic theory, cases and competition law; exercices at the end of each chapter.
- Scherer, F.M. and D. Ross (1990). Industrial Market Structure and Economic Performance, i Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company. One of the first textbook on the topic, still worth reading.
- Whinston, M. (2008),Lectures on Antitrust Economics, MIT Press. A small but dense book with just the right level of sophistication. Focuses on price fixing, horizontal mergers and exclusionary practices.Chapters are available online at
